In the River June 27 2016

"In The River"
Jesus Culture | Let It Echo Album
Featuring Kim Walker-Smith

There is a river where goodness flows
There is a fountain that drowns sorrows
There is an ocean deeper than fear
The tide is rising, rising

There is a current stirring deep inside
It's overflowing from the heart of God
The flood of heaven crashing over us
The tide is rising, rising

Bursting, bursting
Up from the ground
we feel it now
Bursting, bursting
Up from the ground
we feel it now

We come alive in the river
We come alive in the river
We come alive in the river
We come alive in the river

There is a current stirring deep inside
It's overflowing from the heart of God
The flood of heaven crashing over us
The tide is rising, rising

Bursting, bursting
Up from the ground
we feel it now
Bursting, bursting
Up from the ground
we feel it now

We come alive in the river
We come alive in the river
We come alive in the river
We come alive in the river

Break open prison doors
Set all the
captives free
Spring up a well, spring up a well
Spring up the well in me

We come alive in the river
We come alive in the river
We come alive in the river
We come alive in the river

Break open prison doors
Set all the
captives free
Spring up a well, spring up a well
Spring up the well in me

We come alive in the river
We come alive in the river
We come alive in the river
We come alive in the river

You Are Stronger Than You Think May 19 2016

I've shared this story before but I need the reminder and want to share again! I was in a yoga class a few years back. The instructor was tough - but good. I liked going because I knew the 60 minutes that I was there I would be pushed to work hard. One day, he had us in a pose and I just remember my legs were on fire! I was already sore and could barely stand the pain. So I dropped out of the pose. He walked over to my mat and said something along the lines of, "You're stronger than you think... Get back up... You can do this." I listened, got back in the pose, and kept going. Now anytime I'm in a workout and I feel like dropping to the mat or setting the weights down I think of his words and push through.

This hasn't just applied to physical exercise though... There are times when I am tired... Not just physically but emotionally and spiritually. There are seasons where it's like everyday is a new battle of faith. There are days when my thoughts and emotions want to take over and drown out the Truth that's hidden in my heart. Do you know what I'm talking about? Moments come that challenge our already sore hearts and souls and we feel like dropping to the mat and surrendering to the pain. It's important to remember in those moments that: "You are stronger than you think." Not because we are personally strong but because we can lean on and rely on the One who is strongest to come and strengthen our heart and lives so that we keep fighting forward.

The tough times and trials have the opportunity to produce a greater strength inside of us than if we had an easy life. It seems like a disadvantage at the moment to have to battle so much but down the road we'll be thankful for the strength we have gained along the way.

“Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way.”
‭‭James‬ ‭1:2-4‬ ‭MSG‬‬

Hope this leaves you encouraged and ready to push through whatever tough thing you are facing. I just turned this quote into a downloadable print for you!

Worry Less + Pray More May 11 2016

A really encouraging letter came in the mail from my mom the other day. She wrote these words that really touched my heart and I immediately knew that I wanted to share it with anyone else who might need encouraging during a season of waiting.

Waiting for our dreams to come to life can cause a lot of anxiety and distress. I tend to be a more anxious person than others that I know. It's something I am working on. Although, once I read the definition of anxiety, I realized that probably most people face moments of anxiety throughout the day or week.

Anxiety: a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.

Our minds are continually drifting towards what's coming next. We wonder... What will we eat next? What will we wear to the event? What should my degree be in? Will I be able to pay rent? Am I ever going to find a spouse? Am I going to make it through this week? Can I really wait another 2 weeks to see if I am pregnant?

God knew we would struggle with waiting for our dreams to be fulfilled. How do I know that He knows? He has given clear instruction in the Bible to not be anxious. Let's read Philippians 4:6-7 in the Message Version.

Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.

We can use this verse as a guide when we are hit with anxious thoughts or worry. Let's look at this verse broken up into steps.

Don't fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray.

Anytime someone would tell me "don't worry." I would literally think, "how am I suppose to stop worrying?" It's like trying to tell a hungry child, "You aren't hungry." But God goes a step further and doesn't just say, "Don't worry." He says, "Instead of worrying, pray." Now, that is an actionable that is doable. So when an anxious thought pops into our minds and we start getting all worked up just take a moment to pause and say, "Jesus, I am worrying about something that I can't control and ask that you would calm my mind and remind me that my life is in your hands."

Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns.

Remind yourself of times that God has moved on your behalf in the past. The times that He pulled you through a tough situation or did a miracle in your life. Begin to thank Him for it. Praising God takes our focus of us and places it back on God. When we keep God at the front of our mind our worry gets left behind. Then let God know what is bothering you. Let Him know why you are worried and ask Him to get involved. He already knows what you are walking through but it takes faith to ask Him for help.

Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.

This is my favorite part of the verse. It's so amazing that God loves us so much that He doesn't want us to worry. Worry and stress weigh us down and cause more harm than good and we don't have to live with it. I am so thankful for this verse as a reminder of how to displace worry.

If you have read this far, thank you so much. I hope that you are encouraged and let go of any worry or anxiety that is weighing you down.. Choose to remain hopeful, expectant, full of faith, and grateful as you wait for God to fulfill your dreams.

I made this reminder available as a download so that you or a friend can print it out and have a daily reminder of what to do while we wait for God to fulfill our dreams!
