I have put off the old man and have put on the new man, which is renewed in the knowledge after the image of Him Who created me - Colossians 3:9-10

I love fashion! I enjoy watching and reading about the latest trends and styles. I’ve also learned that there are some styles that do not look good on me….and to be honest, don’t look great on anyone! :)

This scripture in Colossians 3:9-10 talks about putting off “the old man” and putting on “the new man.” It sounds a lot like changing outfits. There are some “styles” that should definitely get tossed out when I become a Christ follower. The great news is, we have a guide.

Colossians 3:5-10 instructs us with the style we must purge from our closets. It is not an appropriate reflection of our new life….and let’s be honest, it doesn’t look good on anyone!

“Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.”

The great news is, the scripture gives us great insight into what this new life is supposed to look like!

Colossians 3:12-14 (MSG)

“So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.”

Each one of the qualities mentioned in this passage express themselves in relationships. A significant measure of our Christian life is found simply in how we treat people and the quality of our relationships with them. As we work to become more and more like Christ, our lives should reflect His Image. This is the kind of fashion that never goes out of style!
