I am God’s Child | Day 19 July 19 2015, 0 Comments
In case you missed the announcement about this NEW SERIES | #TruthAboutWhoYouAre take a moment to check out this blog post.
This is Day 19 of 48 of the #TruthAboutWhoYouAre series. Thank you so much for joining in on this journey with me. I hope you are inspired over this 7 week series.
I am excited to introduce to you Laura (aka Girly) Gordy. She is a friend of mine, a wife, a mom and a pastor at my church, The OC Movement. She is passionate about helping people experience freedom which is why I think it is amazing she chose to write about today's scripture. I hope you enjoy and can learn something new from her words.
I am God’s child for I am born again of the incorruptible seed of the Word of God, which lives and abides forever - 1 Peter 1:23
“Mom, how are babies born?” - says my 3 year old son, Tyler, while standing up naked in the bathtub.
O.M.G. THIS. IS. IT.
I’m panicking, and thinking this is my moment to be a brilliant parent and articulate the complexities of producing life in a way that will both be easily understood and hopefully, not scar him for years to come. But, while I am gearing up for what I am expecting to be a riveting explanation that should, without a doubt, be recorded for parents everywhere to imitate, my son asks a follow-up: “like, do they just explode out of their mommies tummies like this?” [Insert whatever silly boy gestures your mind can conjure up.]
So, as it turns out my son was only concerned with the actual logistics of the baby’s arrival. I hang up my intellectual parenting hat and think, no big deal, I can handle this: “No honey, they come out this direction.” Pointing down. Done, crisis averted. Nope.
“Like…… out their butt?”
Now, looking back on this moment, I should have said: “Something like that!” but, NOOOOO, what did I say? I hang my head in shame to admit that I said,
“No… Girls have special holes for that.”
What. In. The. World?!?!?! There goes my Parenting Award! Barely slipped through my fingers there….
By the grace of God, that answer seemed to completely put his mind at ease and Tyler did not probe me further or there’s no telling what else would surely have come out of my mouth! While thankfully I didn't have to explain the conception process to my 3 year old then, it matters for us today. God created everything with the natural progression of seed to fullness of potential. Tyler literally has the DNA of his father and myself, and given the careful parenting and prayerful years of raising him, he has the potential to rock this world with his double portion of stubborn and thoughtful, leadership!
God’s spiritual progression works the same way:
I am God’s child for I am born again of the incorruptible seed of the Word of God, which lives and abides forever. - 1 Peter 1:23
From the moment you decided to surrender your life to Christ, God’s DNA came rushing into you, carrying the life and nature of God within it. And just like a peach seed has the potential to create an exponential amount of peaches, this God-seed has the potential change an exponential amount of lives. You truly are God’s child, with God’s incorruptible seed living in you. That’s my favorite part: incorruptible! There is nothing you have ever done, and nothing you could ever do that could squash the God - potential in you that could grow from nursing a tiny little seed into life!
Its time to hold your head up high knowing that you are God’s child with his DNA, and the full knowledge that there is a God-seed with God-potential in you. My challenge to you today: GROW IT! Focus on whatever growth stage your God-potential is in and daily do what it takes to grow it. If you’re unsure what that looks like for you, I encourage you to stop what you're doing right now and text a Christ-centered leader in your life to ask! You are God’s child, with a unique purpose and plan for your life. Buckle in, this is going to be one exciting, potential-fulfilling life. I, for one, can’t wait!
Lord, help me to realize the DNA that you have put inside me, that little piece of you that fills me with potential to live a huge, God-filled, life! Help me to grow the seed you put inside me into the fullness of Your potential.
