In case you missed the announcement about this NEW SERIES | #TruthAboutWhoYouAre take a moment to check out this blog post.
This is Day 34 of 48 of the #TruthAboutWhoYouAre series. Thank you so much for joining in on this journey with me. I hope you are inspired over this 7 week series.
I am happy to welcome back Laura (aka Girly) Gordy. She is a friend of mine, a wife, a mom and a pastor at my church, The OC Movement. She is passionate about helping people experience freedom which is why I think it is amazing she chose to write about today's scripture. I hope you enjoy and can learn something new from her words.
I am the light of the world - Matthew 5:14
I am the Light of the World. What a mandate? I think for years I have slightly altered the truth of Matthew 5:14. If I were to recite it to you from memory I think it would have gone something like this: “I am a light to this world.” You might be thinking, “Yep, that’s pretty much it.” But there’s something deceiving to my subtle deviations of this scripture. I’ll explain.
I would have told you that our lives are like each of us having a flashlight to illuminate the darkness around us. Which is good, but I’ve recently walked through a season where it was a struggle to ‘turn on my flashlight.’ I wondered how necessary my light amongst the host of flashlights I saw around me, really was. It’ll be ok if, just for today, I hide in the corner and deal with my own stuff, right?!? I mean, I’ve been faithful for a long time. I’ve had my flashlight on full beam and I’m just out of batteries for today. I know you’ve been there.
But as I read and reread this scripture there is a seemingly insignificant tiny word that stands out: THE. ‘The’ is a scary word. ‘The’ means I am it. ‘The Light of the World’ no longer depicts me standing in my kitchen shaking a flashlight back and forth trying to squeeze a little more juice out of some long-overdue batteries. ‘The’ light of the world means I have some course correcting to do.
The only understanding we have for THE light of the world is the sun. I’ll spare you all the scientific details, but there is one thing that the Sun does besides, of course, illuminating the darkness: it grows life. Take a jog down memory lane to your 6th grade science project on photosynthesis and you might recall that sunlight acts as actual food for plant life! There is no substitute for it, it is a requirement for growth. What does that mean for us? Our presence in this world makes a difference and is vital. Not only are we the beacon of hope pointing the way for others who are lost to the live-saving joy that is found in Jesus Christ, but we are also called to see the first signs of life and growth in others and encourage it and bring it to life with our words and actions. When I look around, there are so many seedlings of hope, restoration, healing, and dreaming that I am called to coax into existence! The light I am called to be to this world matters because the people and family that are around me matter. I will be the Light of the World today. I will be a beacon of hope and a grower of life!
